Why this exists

"Is an EV cheaper to charge than gas" searches mostly turn up either a national-average blog post or a manufacturer's best-case number. ChargeCostFinder instead crosses your actual state's EIA residential electricity rate with a specific EV's actual EPA efficiency rating, for every state and every current model.

What goes into the number

Electricity rates are EIA Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.B, residential, by state. EV efficiency is EPA/DOE's own fueleconomy.gov bulk vehicle data, combined kWh per 100 miles. The gas comparison uses a national EIA weekly gasoline price and an EPA gasoline-only fleet average mpg, since no state-level gas price series exists at EIA. Full detail in the methodology guide.

State grain, not per-utility

Electricity rates here are state averages, not per-utility rates — a true per-utility figure would need an EIA API key this site doesn't hold. That's disclosed rather than presented as more precise than it is.
