The arithmetic isn't clamped to favor EVs

This site's model multiplies a state's real residential electricity rate by a real EV's EPA consumption rate — nothing stops that product from exceeding the national gasoline comparison, and for a meaningful share of state-and-model combinations, it does.

A real example

Vinfast VF 8 Plus in Hawaii pairs the priciest electricity in this dataset with one of the least efficient EVs tracked here — the result costs more per mile to charge than the gas-car comparison, and this site shows that result rather than hiding it.

What actually predicts the answer

Two things: the state's electricity rate (see the guide to state rate differences) and the specific model's efficiency — a large, heavy EV can use more than twice the energy per mile of an efficient sedan. Checking both, for your own state and the exact model you're considering, is the whole reason this site publishes every combination instead of one headline number.
